Jaswinder Bhalla, born on 4th May 1960 in the village of Barmalipur, Ludhiana, Punjab, was one of the most beloved figures in Punjabi cinema and comedy. Son of Master Bahadur Singh Bhalla, a primary school teacher, Bhalla’s early life was steeped in rural Punjabi culture, which profoundly influenced his later work as a satirist and comedian.

He completed his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Agriculture from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, followed by a Ph.D. from Chaudhary Charan Singh Post Graduate College, Meerut. Before fully committing to the entertainment industry, Bhalla served as a Professor and Head of the Department of Extension Education at PAU until his retirement in 2020.

Jaswinder Bhalla’s professional comedy career began in 1988 with the album Chhankata 88, a series that achieved legendary status for its sharp social satire embodied in characters such as Chacha Chatar Singh, JB, and Bhana. The Punjabi entertainment industry was shaken on 22nd August 2025, when Jaswinder Bhalla passed away at age 65. He succumbed to complications from a severe brain stroke he suffered on 20th August, which led to significant blood loss. Despite receiving urgent care at Fortis Hospital in Mohali, Punjab, he breathed his last in the early hours of 22nd August 2025.
His cremation took place on 23rd August 2025 at Balongi Cremation Ground in Mohali, attended by family, friends, and industry colleagues who mourned the loss of a towering comedic genius.
